Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. This time I've lost. Not by much, but always. During testing of my DIY LoRa RC link, radio caught a glitch during a flip few meters above a ground. It was not even a failsafe situation. Link recovered a few milliseconds later, but it was too late and quadcopter crashed into the ground.
During a roll, while being behind a tree, RX antenna got hidden behind a carbon fuselage and both antennas were at 90 deg. That was enough.
Damage is not severe, nothing I can not 3D print in one evening. It's more like a discredited honor or something.
The glitch was so short that is was not even recorded in blackbox log. RSSI was fine, no locked rcData. Quadcopter just kept 90deg attitude for too long.
There is a slight chance it was not faulted in software or hardware. Maybe there was a strong rouge TX polluting the aether. Why? I've caught a failsafe on a different quad (2.4GHz FrSky link) while being only a few meters away and a friend caught a failsafe on a TBS Crossfire. So maybe it's not entirely my fault after all.
Marabou Stork, my Depron FPV airplane had a bad luck. Few weeks ago, when I was testing development version of INAV, it crashed during take off. Poor accelerometer calibration combined with a software bug resulted in heavy roll 2 meters above ground. As a result, whole front section was smashed. Everything else more less survived. Luckily, winter is coming, flying season is more less over. I have few month to rebuild the nose and glue it back into place. With some extra reinforcements.

My FPV acrobatic skills are low. Very, very low. I try to practice and at least I’m not crashing as often as I used to crash, but still, my skills are low. But I’ve learned few things: trees are the enemy, and I really should stop flying near them. Because when I fly near then, this is happening:
When you want to fix a problem that does not need fixing you get yourself into trouble. Like me, trying to tune perfectly fine elevator. Few seconds after take off plane dives and crashes into the ground. Wing and all the gear survived. Fuselage broke in half. Time to manufacture a new one.
Rule number one when doing flips with multirotor (quadcopter) drone is to watch your altitude. Specially with bigger machines without big thrust to weight ratio. If you will not control altitude, it might end like that:
Quadcopter (built on Raptile 500 frame and Flip32+ FC) survived without a scratch. Camera (RunCam HD) survived as well. It “only” detached for quadcopter and traveled few meters by itself until landed in grass.
Hitting the ground with a drone is not healthy. For pilot’s self esteem and UAV both. Specially when impact’s force will be taken by one of the motors. Most probably it will survive, they are quite tough little devices, but delicate bearing will take punishment and might wear off. Luckilly, signals of damaged bearings are easy to notice: motor starts to make strange noises and you can hear oscillations during maneuvers. At this point you have two options: replace whole motor, or replace bearings.

Crashes when flying any RC gear happens. And lower the entry level, more crashes we can see. Like, for example, those two “hard landings” I had few weeks ago.
First one is 100% pilot’s fault. I’ve got lost with FPV gear, lost sense of altitude and just hit that small tree trying to recover. Quad survived almost without a scratch.
Second one is a hardware fault and a proof that electronic components are sensitive to water. BEC got wet during rain and stopped to provide constant voltage. As a result, flight controller, OpenPilot CC3D in this case, was reseting itself on random basis. Result? Uncontrolled and rapid descend. This time quadcopter had taken some damage: broken landing gear. Good thing those things are pretty cheap, but still, it takes time to ship from China. In a meantime, steel wire 1.8mm has to work as landing gear replacement.
